2011 has come and gone.  Now, we are gearing up for 2012.  Elgin County Junior

Farmers have been busy with community events around the county such as an oil

and battery drive with Elgin Federation of Agriculture, Belmont corn maze bake

sale selling hotdogs and delicious treats, and Relay for Life in June for the Canadian

Cancer Society.  We have also done fun activities such as bowling, Can-Am: All

Breeds Equine Emporium, canning apples and going to the beach.

Elgin County Junior Farmers are not just about spending time in our own county, but visiting other counties either through the Ontario Young Farmer’s Forum, Winter Games, March Conference, Leadership Camp, and other provincial and local events in Ontario.

History of Elgin JF

In January 1915, the Aylmer Junior Farmers Improvement Association was organized with sixteen members; in 1916 the Rodney club was founded; in 1917 twelve young men set up a Springfield club; and in 1918 the Middlemarch club was established. When the County Association was formed in 1923, President Donald Begg of St. Thomas described how the county group worked: “Our Junior Farmers are organized under a county organization... each district has a committee of the two members to look after interested (young men) of that section.” The Elgin girls’ Institute operated in the same way with a group of county officers, and instead of local branches or clubs a convenor or director was appointed for each district. In 1924, when the Elgin Girls’ Institute was organized, Margaret Brown of Shedden was elected President and Muriel Styles of Shedden, Vice-President. The Elgin County Junior Farmers’ Association, with thirty-seven members, and the Elgin Girls’ Institute, with twenty members, affiliated with the Provincial organization in 1944.
In 1980 four clubs with almost 150 members were affiliated with the Provincial Association.
