Reviving or starting a new JF club can be a challenging thing - but thanks to the support of local organizations, JFAOs two newest clubs are off to a strong start financially.
This summer both Peterborough JF and Wentworth JF have received grants to get their clubs off the ground - Peterborough receiving $1500 from the executive committee of the International Plowing Match in Lanark, and Wentworth $2500 from the city of Hamiltons Agricultural and Rural Affairs committee. Peterborough has been inactive since 2003, and Wentworth since the late-1990’s. Both clubs have approximately 25 members so far this year.
"We were all surprised when we heard how much funding Wentworth JF was receiving," says President Julia Smith. "It was much more than we had asked for."
Wentworth JF has been working on a number of projects to meet the affiliation requirements for JFAO, most recently adopting a section of Highway 52 north of the 403. It also partnered with Hamilton Eat Local to promote awareness of local growers and eating healthier produce from the area.
"Since most of the club is quite young, the grant money will go a long ways towards helping members experience provincial workshops and events. Wentworth is full of enthusiastic members who are trying their hardest to get the county back into JF," Smith says. "As a club, well be deciding how best to use the money to better the community and improve our members' leadership skills."
Peterborough JF has also been quite active, adopting a section of Highway 7 and working on participating in provincial activities.
