Christena Jenkins-Giffen - Ireland Exchange Part 1 - 2025

Week 1 of 3 in Ireland: July 25th – 31st, 2025

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to go on my second International Exchange with Junior Farmers, this time to the Republic of Ireland. My first week was jam packed with adventure and so many new friends; ones which I’m happy to say we reconnect with later on this journey with Macra. I had a perfect mix of agriculture and tourism and so much delicious food! Having seen tillage farms, dairy, sheep, cattle, turkey and chickens, Macra events, dancing, and beaches; who thought there could be even more to see in the 2 weeks to follow! Please follow along with me on my journey and consider going on an exchange yourself. I know I will treasure my travelling opportunities for years to come, don’t let fear hold you back!

“There are no strangers here, only friends we have yet to meet” from a street sign in Dublin. This trip couldn’t have been phrased any better, even though I flew out of Canada alone, I landed in Ireland and met people who welcomed me in with arms wide open and made me feel like family and best friends.

Day 1:  July 25th, 2025

Host Geraldine Hoey, Castlebellingham, Stabannon Macra, County Louth, tillage farmers

Wow what a first day in Ireland. My travels began on July 24th with a long layover in Toronto, and landing in Ireland around 5am where I learned my luggage didn’t make the flight with me! I met my new travel buddy Linda from Switzerland at 9am when she landed. Geraldine collected us from the airport in Dublin and escorted us back to her family farm and proceeded to show us so much of her area in a day! I was running on very little sleep but it was worth it to power through a full day to get the most out of the trip!

  • George’s yard, brother, outside Dunleer, Athclare castle, built in 1550s, attached to home with sheep

      • We cannot teach people anything; we can only help them discover it within themselves – Galileo Galilei (self-discovery which this trip also evokes)
    • Ballygar Carnival for Ride

That is a wrap on my first week in Ireland. I had a whirlwind of a week, having 3 amazing and generous hosts. We had the luck of the Irish and had beautiful weather. I can’t wait to share with you how the rest of the trip unfolds.  Youd would think there can’t possibly be more, but there is! No regrets, only lifelong memories and friends.
